Heel Pain Doesn’t Have to Be an Uphill Battle, According to Dr. William Knudson

Heel pain is definitely an uncomfortable situation, says Dr. William Knudson. The most common reasons for what is known as plantar fasciitis are usually related to poor foot structure. Not surprisingly, people who tend to have issues with flat feet or high arches are more prone to foot pain issues.


According to Dr. William Knudson, there are many factors that contribute to plantar fasciitis. Wearing non-supportive footwear while standing on rigid surfaces puts an abnormally high amount of stress on the plantar fascia. Obesity and a lack of exercise may also contribute.


Symptoms of plantar fasciitis that Dr. William Knudson has noted include:

  • Foot pain – particularly on the bottom of the heel
  • Pain when flexing the arch of the foot
  • Pain that worsens upon standing or increases over the course of several months

Dr. William Knudson explains that the majority of patients who experience plantar fasciitis report the pain is most severe in the mornings. This may be due to extended periods of inactivity.

Non-surgical treatment

Sufferers of plantar fasciitis may find relief with a few simple home remedies. These include:

  • Stretching – Stretching can ease some of the pain and help with recovery.
  • Wearing properly fitted shoes – Going barefoot or walking in nonsupportive shoes, like flip-flops, puts unnecessary strain on the plantar fascia.
  • Cold therapy – Ice may be an effective treatment to help reduce inflammation.
  • Reduced activity – Certain physical activities, such as jogging or jumping, may put stress on the heel and cause more pain. Cutting down on direct impact activities may help with recovery.
  • Over-the-counter relief – Ibuprofen or other oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may help with pain and discomfort.

When self-help is not enough, Dr. William Knudson suggests seeking the services of a reputable podiatrist. A podiatrist may offer suggestions as to orthotic devices, night splints, or injection or physical therapy.
